home reovation on a budget

There are a few steps to take before tackling any home improvement project. We know it can be daunting, and the possibilities seem endless (because they are!) so:

How do you know where to start?

Knowing where to start is intimidating, and often, there is no one place. If you’re not yet sure which part of your house you’d like to improve/renovate, here are some ideas that may get you going:

There are so many great projects that can happen in the kitchen. It is, after all, the “heart of the home.”

Cabinets: custom, semi-custom, hardware, DIY refinishing.

Countertops and Backsplash: Custom, refinishing, stone, laminate, wood, butcher block, etc.

Flooring: wood, tile, laminate, rugs, DIY.

Ceilings: removing popcorn ceiling, track lighting, fans, beams, etc.

Appliances: stoves,dishwashers, new technology, etc.

Furniture: islands, storage ideas, shelving, etc.

Another room ripe for the renovations: the bathroom. This room can boost the value of your home greatly, when done right.

Vanities: Single, double, sink types, materials and hardware, mirrors, lighting.

Tubs/Showers: Standing, shower heads, tub types, clawfoot, etc.

Flooring/Walls: Tile, wainscoting, paneling, painting, etc.

Plumbing: faucets, shower heads, toilets, etc.

This is the most intimate area of the home. It is where you sleep, dress, and feel most comfortable. Why not make it totally your own, and a pleasure to spend your moments in?

Flooring: plush carpets and rugs, hardwood floor ideas, painting/clear-coating floors, laminate, tile, etc.

Closets: Adding room, storage, expansions, doors and shelving, etc.

Walls: Painting, wall paper, designs/stencils.

Ceiling: Adding fans, removing popcorn ceiling, track lighting.

Furniture: Bedframes, under-bed storage, seating areas, headboards, etc.

Now, the living room. The place of entertainment and relaxation. This may be the room that most of your time is spent in. Make it a place to gather and entertain!

Flooring/Walls: Hardwood, refinishing, adding carpet, choosing rugs, painting, clear-coating.

Ceiling: Adding fans, beams, painting patterns, removing popcorn ceiling.

Furniture: Modern, shabby chic, cottage, budget.

Electronics: TVs, projection screens, gaming systems, sound systems, cord management, wall mounting systems.

These general improvement ideas can be used in nearly any room of the house (sunroom, play rooms, patios, etc!), and hopefully this starting point has inspired you enough to start planning your own projects.
